The HTC process in 4 simple steps:

In its simplest form, HTC is the dehydration of carbohydrates in water under mild temperatures and pressures. Within the HTC reactor, there are 4 core processes:

Advantages of HTC

Carbon Efficiency

Quick conversion time – leading to small footprint

Robust thermochemical conversion

Feedstock agnostic (limited to organic waste)

About BioCoal and BioSolution

The HTC process mimics natural geological processes which occur over hundreds of millions of years to form fossil fuels (Coal, Oil, Natural Gas).  The SoMax process however, accomplishes the same formation in minutes to hours resulting in BioCoal, which can be mechanically pressed into pellets or briquets for energy generation.  The remaining water is rich in nutrients and can be used as a liquid fertilizer without any further processing before sale and application.

Solid BioCoal

Utilizing our energy-dense solid BioCoal to generate heat and electricity is the simplest and most common use. BioCoal has equivalent energy density as coal.

When BioCoal is used to replace fossil fuels in power generation, our customers achieve net zero carbon energy.

Another common use is utilizing BioCoal as a soil amendment increasing soil porosity, reducing erosion and runoff, while providing sustainable sources of nutrients for crop growth.

    Liquid BioSolution

Derived from the original biomass feedstock, our BioSolution fertilizers contain beneficial compounds including:

    Nitrogen | Phosphorus | Potassium

The liquid BioSolution can either be used directly as a liquid fertilizer or the phosphorus and nitrogen can be extracted providing clean water and concentrated nutrients for agricultural activities.

    Our Solutions For You

    Waste Water Treatment Plant

Waste disposal options are reducing. Costs are increasing 7-8% per year. Regulations are forthcoming for microplastics, forever chemicals, and other toxins to be removed from the environment.

SoMax solutions offer financial savings, energy efficiency, and positive environmental impacts.

    • HTC helps wastewater treatment plants convert biosolids into BioCoal and advanced biofuel for powering plant operations. This results in financial savings in disposal and energy costs and fewer carbon emissions.
    • HTC can complement anaerobic digestion with minimal additional space needed within plant operations.

    – Increasing capacity for codigestion

    – Maximizing biogas production

    – Eliminating digestate disposal

    Food Producers & Farms

Food, agriculture and manure pose an environmental and economic threat if not disposed of properly. A solution is needed to take these organic resources and transform them into positive, clean, and financially rewarding BioProducts.

    • HTC is that solution. SoMax HTC helps food producers, retailers, consumers and livestock farms convert unsold or unusable food, agriculture, and manure into clean BioCoal and fertilizer.
    • These BioProducts can be used to improve soil health, power operations, and filter water and gas. These green products can be used within the original operation or can be sold to third parties.

    Waste Management & Hauling

Landfill capacity is decreasing and set to reach capacity by 2035. Organics are the largest single stream of waste. Regulations on PFAS and other chemicals are being proposed by the EPA, and states and municipalities are implementing organic waste bans.

Diverting organic wastes reduces leachate, methane and CO2 emissions, decreasing operational and regulatory risks.

HTC can effectively convert organic waste and provide additional savings or revenue streams through the consumption or sale of BioProducts.

America's Dairyland May Have a PFAS Problem

The toxic chemicals have been showing up in milk around the country, prompting midwestern farmers to take a closer look at their land.

Toxic Synthetic 'Forever Chemicals' Are In Our Water and On Our Plates

What makes PFAS chemicals extremely useful—and extremely hard to get rid of—are the bonds between carbon and fluorine atoms that are almost impossible to break.

Composting: Good For Your Garden, Bad For Our Landfills

Composting is often described as nature’s way of “recycling” organic matter like food waste into an extremely useful humus-like substance that can be used to enrich soil without artificial chemicals.
